The Dignified National Treasure. Famous for Hachiko, symbol of loyalty.
The Akita Inu is a large, powerful, and dignified breed originating from the mountainous northern regions of Japan. Known for their unwavering loyalty to their owners, they are often aloof with strangers but affectionate with family members. They possess a bear-like head and a thick double coat that allows them to withstand cold climates.
Originally bred for hunting bears, boars, and deer in the Akita prefecture, they were also used as guard dogs. The breed has a storied history, including being declared a Japanese Protected Species in 1931. The story of Hachiko, who waited for his deceased owner for nine years, epitomises the breed's loyalty.
Akitas are quiet, fastidious, and intelligent. They are known to be independent thinkers and can be dominant with other dogs. Early socialisation and consistent, positive reinforcement training are crucial. They are fiercely protective of their family.
Their thick double coat requires regular brushing, especially during shedding seasons (twice a year). They need moderate exercise, such as daily walks, but are generally calm. Due to their size and strength, they are best suited for experienced owners.
