The Hokkaido Ken, also known as the Ainu Dog, is a medium-sized breed with a thick coat to withstand the cold winters of Hokkaido. They are strong, sturdy, and have a unique history with the Ainu people.
They are thought to be the oldest of the Japanese breeds. The Ainu people used them for hunting bear and deer. They were designated a Protected Species in 1937. They are known for their bravery in confronting large game.
Hokkaido Kens are known for their courage and loyalty. They are excellent watchdogs and are very devoted to their families. They can be wary of strangers and other dogs if not properly socialised.
They need daily exercise and play. Their thick coat needs regular brushing. They are intelligent and eager to please but require a firm and consistent leader.
