Legend of the White Wolf. Noble hunters from Wakayama.
The Kishu Ken is a medium-sized breed, traditionally used for hunting boar and deer in the mountainous Kii peninsula. They are typically white, though other colours exist. They are known for their strength, endurance, and noble appearance.
The breed has been a Protected Species since 1934. Legend says the Kishu descended from a wolf that a hunter saved, which then gifted him a puppy. They were bred for performance and efficiency in hunting large game.
Kishu Kens are brave, alert, and intelligent. They are affectionate and loyal to their family but can be aloof with strangers. They have a strong prey drive and may not do well with small pets. They are known for being calm and quiet in the house.
They need significant daily exercise to stay happy and healthy. A secure yard is important. Their short double coat is easy to groom but sheds. Socialisation from a young age is vital.
