The Global Icon. Smallest and oldest breed. Spirited and independent.
The Shiba Inu is the smallest of the six original and distinct spitz breeds of dog native to Japan. A small, agile dog that copes very well with mountainous terrain, the Shiba Inu was originally bred for hunting. It looks similar to and is often mistaken for other Japanese dog breeds like the Akita Inu or Hokkaido, but the Shiba Inu is a different breed with a distinct bloodline, temperament, and smaller size.
The Shiba Inu is an ancient breed, with bones similar to modern Shibas found in excavations dating back to the Jomon period. They were used to hunt small game and birds. The breed nearly went extinct during World War II but was revived from three remaining bloodlines.
Shibas are known for their spirited boldness (kan'i), good nature (ryosei), and artlessness (soboku). They are independent, intelligent, and fastidious, often described as cat-like. They can be reserved with strangers but are loyal to their families.
Shibas are generally clean and easy to housebreak. They need daily exercise and mental stimulation. Their double coat sheds moderately throughout the year and heavily twice a year. Secure fencing is essential as they have a high prey drive and recall can be selective.
