The Japanese Wolfdog. Primal appearance, high endurance.
The Shikoku Ken is a medium-sized spitz breed from Shikoku island. They have a wolf-like appearance and are prized for their endurance and keen senses. They are rugged dogs, built for hunting in mountainous terrain.
Originally used for hunting boar, they are one of the purest of the Japanese breeds. They were designated a Protected Species in 1937. The breed is rare even in Japan.
Shikokus are energetic, alert, and enthusiastic. They are very loyal to their owners and enjoy human companionship but are not overly clingy. They have a high prey drive and are very athletic.
This breed requires a lot of exercise and mental stimulation. They are great companions for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts. They are intelligent but can be stubborn, so patient training is needed.
